2025-02 internship report byEmma Olsson and Lea Wahler

We cannot believe that this is our last report and the end of our stay at the MCC. Time passed by so fast!! We had an amazing time with lots of new experiences and nice moments together. Now when we know everyone and everything and feel comfortable with our daily life, it’s time to say goodbye. We made a lot of new friends and learned many new things, about the Kenyan life and ourselves. We want to share some of the good moments we had.

On the first weekend of February, we had chocolate toast for breakfast. The kids, and the staff, loved it!

Then we started to craft the “Asante sana” cards with the sponsored kids. First we had a crafting session with the MCC children. After we finished the cards for the sponsors, we also did some valentines cards.

Later in February we invited the sponsored students from the Secondary School to craft cards as well. Then during the mid-term break some of the community based kids were invited to make their cards. The crafting was always fun with the kids and a great chance to get to know the sponsored kids outside MCC. Some of the kids are really talented!

In between our volunteering work we took three days off to see a bit of Kenya. We went to Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha and Hells Gate national park. We had an amazing time and saw a lot of wild animals and cool places. It was a nice trip but we were also happy when we came back to the kids.

Furthermore, Matron Mirriam was on leave for two weeks which felt so weird since we really have a good relationship with her and she is always supporting us. Everything went on well and it also shows that the kids are comfortable with the new Patron Patrick.

We also have a new school bus driver, Peter. He fits in the MCC family very well and everyone loves him. He also helps with taking care of the compound of MCC. This week he planted new strawberry trees.

As the kindergarten changed to a library a long time ago, it was time to chance the label on the wall. The kids were a great help and their artist skills were showed again.

We got the chance to visit the Skills Centre and Mobility Centre together with Mercy. It was nice to see the places as we talk about them often. It’s a great place to prepare the students for their future careers. They have so many different faculties like electric wiring, welding, hairdressing and beauty and car mechanics.

One Saturday we went for a walk to a nearby borehole and lake with some of the older kids. Of course they wanted to swim in the water… The kids really had fun and for us it was interesting to see how the community gets their drinking water.

On one of our off days we made a trip to Nairobi to visit the Elephant Orphanage, Giraffe Centre and Kazuri Beads. It was nice to come that close to the animals and we enjoyed making our own bracelets at Kazuri Beads. Apart from the activities we did, it is always an adventure to go outside the MCC.

The day after, it was finally time for a second picnic. We went on a long walk to a river, a lake and then another river. It was so much fun and adventurous walking in the river and trough the bushes. We enjoyed a break in between with bananas, cookies and some sweets.

In our last week at MCC the kids had their mid-term break from Wednesday to Friday. We are so thankful we could spend more time with the kids on our last days. We had time for a lot of playing and talking. And we had the chance to do so many nice activities with them.

We started the break with baking a cake to celebrate. We got help from a few kids and Philip in the bakery. The cake was delicious and everyone enjoyed!

One night we had a bonfire after dinner. The kids got smokies and crisps. We listened to music, danced and had a really good time together.

Friday evening it was time for pasta! Many kids helped us preparing the dinner and we got a lot of help from Julius. It’s not that easy to cook spaghetti for 50 people, but we managed. The kids were very happy with the result.

Now it’s time to say goodbye which is not easy for us. The kids are lovely, the staff is great and the atmosphere at MCC is so special. We are really thankful for being a part of the family for the last two months and they will always be with us in our memories. We had a perfect time and wish the coming volunteers the same amazing experience. Asante Sana!
